Welcome to the Theatre Practice online exhibition.

Please explore the exhibition by selecting a room.

Based in London, but born and raised in Scotland, I have been influenced a lot by where I grew up, from geometric architecture to remote country farmhouses. I have a strong interest in designing flexible, moving and dynamic environments. I am very practically-minded and enjoy working mainly in a digital format.

Machinal

By Sophie Treadwell

Directed by Suzanne Gorman

Set & Costume Design by Conor Smart

Lighting Design by Kathy Sandys

Sound Design by Jack Baxter

This young woman, an ordinary young woman, cannot find her place, cannot find peace in an industrialised world where ordinary people are compelled to submit to the repetitive machinery of life. When she finds herself caught in a loveless marriage, our ordinary young woman’s bid to be free leads to devastating consequences.

Prague Quadrennial 2019

Student and Early Career Designer Exhibition

UK Team:

Curators – Andreas Skourtis and Fiona Watt

Designers – Rhi Binnington, Scott Casnett, Vivianna Chiotini, May Davies, Abi McDermott, Yifat Shir- Moskovitz, Conor Smart, Jordan Smith, Kathryn Weaving

The Future Utopia’s Imaginarium was a kinetic, experimental laboratory space, populated and facilitated by a dynamic student and early career curatorial team, directly linked to the Staging Places studio. The audience is invited to observe and interact with a team of ‘’Future Makers’’ in a circular space that sits between a factory and a gameshow. An endlessly recurring process to build a future utopia is activated by chance and imagination, and overseen by a mysterious authority figure.

La Calisto

By Francesco Cavalli

Speculative Design

Directed by Tim Hopkins

Set & Costume Design by Conor Smart

I saw a lot of similarities between the characters of this opera and the popularised view of the 1970s, both the nightclub lifestyle and the hippy / peace movement. I hoped by setting this opera in a familiar location it would emphasise the grotesque behaviour of the characters.

Attempts on Her Life

By Martin Crimp

Directed by Geoff Colman

Set Design by Kwok Hei Tung

Costume Design by Conor Smart

Lighting Design by Harvey Nowak-Green

Sound Design by Raffaela Pancucci

Although our production of Attempts on Her Life was cancelled due to Covid-19, this hasn’t stopped me continuing with the show and finishing the costume renderings I had started. Our approach to this play was to make it simple yet beautiful, we wanted to create a space of meditation for the audience. I felt the costumes should both reflect this tranquil atmosphere and add a bit of mystery through a timeless quality.
