Costume Maker & Theatrical MillinerScroll Down
While at Central I have explored my love of theatre and live performance while learning valuable skills in pattern drafting, garment construction and costume fitting. I enjoy problem solving unusual silhouettes using my understanding of period clothing and my skills include traditional and contemporary tailoring as well as millinery, which is an area of costume I thoroughly enjoy. My specialist skills in this discipline include experience working with a range of materials and I love taking on a challenge.
Please see below the two projects I worked on in my final year at Central.
A re-creation of Catherine Martin’s design for Jordan Baker in the 2013 film The Great Gatsby.
I worked as the cutter and maker as well as fitting the garment to a model. I enjoyed drafting the patterns and problem solving the unusual cut of the dress. I created a matching hat to suit Catherine Martin’s Jordan Baker design using a straw capeline which I blocked and steamed on a padded hat block. I loved working with this material and advancing my hand sewing skills.
Key Skills: pattern drafting, flat tacking, concealed zip, appliqué, block padding, steaming, straw stiffening, hand sewing.
A re-creation of Colleen Atwood’s zoot-suit design for The Wolf in the 2014 film Into the Woods.
I worked as the cutter and maker as well as fitting the garment to a model. I enjoyed creating the collar, constructing the button fly and refining my tailoring skills. I created a matching hat to suit Colleen Atwood’s Wolf design using a felt capeline which I blocked and steamed on a fedora block. I love working with felt hoods and I enjoyed problem solving the ears and fur.
Key Skills: pad stitching, shawl collar, jet pockets, button fly, felt blocking, hand sewing, problem solving, working with fur.
Below is a collective video of our class work in progress which shows the technical skills as well as the time that went into creating our final year projects.
